Change Cup

This project was during my time in The University of Tennessee Graphic Design program. We were tasked with creating our own brand/business and design all branding and collateral. Change Cup is a nonprofit coffee shop that helps combat homelessness in Knoxville by employing those who ordinarily can not find jobs. The coffee shop also would have a housing facility that funds from the shop and coffee subscription boxes help fund. Every year the shop would also canvas Knoxville for Change Day, a day where volunteers go around collecting spare change as a fundraiser for the nonprofit.

For the logo, I almost wanted to lean into the cliche of collecting change with a cup as well as parallel inciting change by drinking coffee and providing housing.

The pattern was created via two different experimentation methods. First, the horizontal lines were created by counting out drum beats and tempo of one of that years artist’s songs. Next the circular pattern was created by taking a photo of a coffee filter, image tracing it, and copy/rotating the vector until this pattern was produced. The gradient colors are representative of the Knoxville area sunrises and sunsets.

The first branding piece created was a posted advertising the festival and some of it’s artists. These posters were displayed during the festival for patrons to view.
